Local mechanic, or worth a drive?

Revised 10/22/24

Should you use the mechanic closest to your house or drive to a specific mechanic no matter the distance?

What if you are driving to a family event and your vehicle breaks down leaving you stranded? In many cases, the best solution is to find the nearest mechanic to your location and assume they will be able to handle the repairs and treat you fairly. If you have a flat tire, any tire shop should be able to do an adequate job. If you need a head gasket or transmission replacement then the auto repair shop you choose matters much more and you might consider being towed a longer distance to a shop you trust.

Trust is the most important factor between the customer and the repair shop. One mechanic might say you need new brakes and unless you are mechanical you might not know how to tell. But if you don’t feel right about it, you can either ask them to show you or get a second opinion from another mechanic. Simply gathering two different opinions will help clarify things, but if the second opinion is someone you have a reason to trust then it will carry much more weight than the first opinion. Sometimes this trust comes from a friend or family member connection to the mechanic, and often from simply using them previously with a good experience.

Here are some things to look for when choosing a trustworthy mechanic or deciding if you can trust the current mechanic:

  1. Do they answer their phone promptly and communicate well?

  2. Do they give clear estimates of the price and time needed to complete repairs?

  3. Will they show you the failed parts, send you photos, or keep the old parts for you to look at?

  4. Did they complete it on schedule, or give you frequent updates on the repair progress?

  5. Can you get a vote of confidence from a third party? Friend, family, or online review recommendations.

  6. Did the total cost of the repair match what you were quoted most recently? Are the costs itemized and any changes to the original plan clearly outlined?

If you determine you can trust your mechanic for your auto and diesel repairs, then the distance from your location to the shop doesn’t always matter.

For example, here at Rigid Repair we have customers that bring vehicles to us from a block away and an hour’s drive away. Our convenient location on state street in Fountain Green does help with proximity to residents and travelers through Fountain Green or Moroni UT and surrounding areas. But given our higher level of communication and existing trust with the community, we have people passing multiple shops to come to our location from Mt. Pleasant, Fairview, Nephi, Santaquin, Eagle Mountain, and more.

Give us a shot to show you what a trustworthy auto repair shop should look like. We thoroughly inspect and diagnose your vehicle so we can give the right diagnosis and solution the first time. Then we send you all the inspection notes, photos or videos of the failed parts, and an itemized estimate for each job that was recommended for you to make an informed decision. Once you approve one or all of the jobs from your phone, we will let you know the estimated completion time for the repairs. Sometimes new problems are found when performing a more complicated repair, but we won’t surprise you with additional expenses. We will send an update to you with any changes to parts, labor, or timelines and make sure you have an understanding rather than feeling led through confusion.

Rigid Repair is a trustworthy auto repair shop worth driving to. No matter where you live or break down, we are willing to help in any way possible. Please reach out with any questions about auto or diesel repair and we will help coordinate repairs or towing to our shop. Call or text us today! 435-262-9159
